EXPERIENCE:

Assistant Professor (Research), Wayne State University, August, 1998 - present

Visiting Assistant Professor, Wayne State University, August, 1997 - July, 1998

Graduate Research Assistant, Wayne State University, May, 1993 - August, 1997
Major work: Infrared thermal wave imaging of corrosion and disbonding on aircraft. This work is supported by grants and contracts from the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). In addition, I have begun a research program on photon density wave imaging. In particular, I am developing techniques to improve the resolution of photon density wave images by using inverse scattering methods. This work is ultimately aimed at providing an alternative to x-rays for some medical diagnostics, e.g., mammography.
Other projects has been worked on:
Development of techniques to measure the thickness of ceramic coatings on turbine engine parts
Development of a technique to determine the depths of defects in metals and composite materials
Inversion of thermal wave images. This technique removes the blurring from thermal wave images and makes them easier to interpret.
Inversion of photon density wave images. This is similar to the inversion of thermal wave images, and is intended for tumor detecton in optical mammography.

Engineer, Institute of Automation, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, June, 1991 - April, 1993
Major work: Development and production of digital read-out instruments which use a linear optical grating and micro-computer chips to control the signal acquisition, processing, and display, as well as the interface. There are several series of the products for different accuracy displacement measurements and different user interests. There were patents and awards on these projects.

Assistant Engineer , Institute of Beijing Machine Tools, the Ministry of Machine-Building and Electronics, PRC, Beijing July, 1985 - September, 1988 Major work: Development and production of a high accuracy measurement tool for industrial machinery; a combination of laser technology, electronics, and micro-computer and mechanical control systems. This super-size instrument has been widely used in the National Standard Measurement Bureau, Machine Tools Test Center of the Ministry of Machine-Building and Electronics, PRC, other scientific and engineering institutes, and manufacturing plants. This product is patented, and won an innovation award.
